Life#
Bahcivan Oglu Kalparki Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took 14 years, at the Darulfunun Hukuk; Bahcivan Oglu Kalparki also wrote French, Italian and Turkish. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, no other studied at Darulfunun Hukuk.
The first annual entry, for 1878, places Bahcivan Oglu Kalparki in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Emlak Vergi Memuru. Next came Beyoğlu from 1878 to 1885, then Üsküdar from 1885 to 1887. From 1887 to 1910 the annual entries place Bahcivan Oglu Kalparki again in Istanbul, first as Bidayet Mahkeme Azasi, from 1894/95 as Ticareti Bahriye Mahkemesi Azasi and from 1901/02 as Bidayet Mahkeme Azasi.
Pay rose from 900 kuruş a month in 1878 to a peak of 2,500 in 1901/02, as Bidayet Mahkeme Azasi in Istanbul, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less.
