Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1848/49 (AH 1265), Mehmet Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "seyhul islam hademesi". Mehmet Şükrü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Kaptan Odasi in Istanbul in 1862/63, at about 14, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1870/71 to 1909/10 places Mehmet Şükrü in Istanbul, the birthplace, with four changes of title, from Ambar Kalemi to PT Umumiyesi Ambar Muduru in 1909/10. Entries spanning 41 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 384 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 2,500 in 1909/10, as PT Umumiyesi Ambar Muduru in Istanbul, when nine in ten paid officials earned less.
