Life#
İbrahim Sarim Bey was born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Babiali Hulefasi". Schooling took seven years, at the Sant Mary Mektebi. In all İbrahim Sarim knew four languages, French and Turkish in writing and Arabic and Italian in speech; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, no other studied at Sant Mary Mektebi.
İbrahim Sarim began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 22, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places İbrahim Sarim in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the foreign accounts office (Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi). İbrahim Sarim then moved to Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Beyoğlu from 1871 to 1875, then back to Istanbul from 1875 to 1879, with a rise to a post in the Fen Kalemi. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Sarim to five places in 18 years, with a rise to Reji Muduru in 1884/85. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1898 to 1904.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 3,000 in 1893/94, the peak, as Asar Mufettisi in Bursa, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04. İbrahim Sarim received a rank (rütbe).
