Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdurrahman Şakir Bey was the child of a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1863/64, at about 16, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Abdurrahman Şakir as Hademe in Mabeyni humayun, where the entries run to 1875/76. Abdurrahman Şakir then moved back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1877 to 1881, then İnegöl in 1881/82, as Nahiye Muduru. From 1883 to 1905 the annual entries place Abdurrahman Şakir again in Istanbul, first as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), from 1891/92 as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru). In place of a title the lists give Aciga Cikarildi for 1876/77.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 1,500 kuruş a month in 1872/73, as Hademe in Mabeyni humayun, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. Over 33 years pay ended below where it began, 800 kuruş against 1,500; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. In all, 33 years of salary come to 275,040 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
