Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Hasan Remzi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1888/89, Hasan Remzi began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 35 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Hasan Remzi in Yeni camii postanesi as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), where the entries run to 1893/94. From 1894 to 1904 the annual entries place Hasan Remzi in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 35 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 300 in 1903/04, the peak, as Mersule Memuru in Istanbul, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 15 years of salary come to 29,220 kuruş, 32 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
