Life#
Born in Hârșova (Hırsova) in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Bekir Şakir Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Bekir Şakir had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1889/90, Bekir Şakir began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Bekir Şakir in Yeni camii postanesi in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi), where the entries run to 1891/92. The last posts were in Sirkeci from 1892 to 1894.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1889/90, in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Yeni camii postanesi, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1893/94.
