Life#
Born in Ruse (Rusçuk) in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Ethem Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). İbrahim Ethem had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, and attended the telegraph school as well.
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1888/89, to 1906/07, every annual entry places İbrahim Ethem in the same post, official (Memur), in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 800 in 1903/04, as Memur in Istanbul, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
