Life#
Ömer Lütfi Efendi was born in Ruse (Rusçuk) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ömer Lütfi began work in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Ömer Lütfi in Acre (Akka) as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98. The last posts were in Tripoli in 1898/99 and Haskovo (Hasköy) in 1899/1900.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 400 in 1899/1900, as Posta Memuru in Haskovo, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 22,800 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
