Life#
Born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Mehmet Ali Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Ali also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 18, in 1892/93, Mehmet Ali began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Mehmet Ali in Adana as a postal official (Posta Memuru). Mehmet Ali then moved to Aleppo (Halep) from 1895 to 1900, then Damascus (Şam), Beyani nasif and Zor from 1900 to 1903. The last posts were in Akabetus sam from 1904 to 1906, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 1,000 in 1900/01, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Damascus, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
