Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279), İsmail Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). İsmail Nuri had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 13, in 1875/76, İsmail Nuri began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with İsmail Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Keşan. İsmail Nuri then moved to Varna, Keşan, Adana and İskenderun, four places in nine years, then Aleppo (Halep) from 1886 to 1902, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1892/93. Next came Mada'in Salih in 1902/03, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Aleppo again from 1903 to 1907.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 1,000 in 1902/03, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Mada'in Salih, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 630 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
