Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Ali Haydar Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1880/81, Ali Haydar began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Adana, paid from the start, on 380 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Ali Haydar in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ali Haydar to Aleppo in 1881/82. The last posts were in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) from 1882 to 1889. In place of a title the lists give Askere Alindi for 1889/90.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 450 in 1882/83, as Muhabere Memuru in Kahramanmaraş, when 37 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1889/90. Ali Haydar received a rank (rütbe).
