Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1845 (AH 1261) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). İsmail had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1859/60, İsmail began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1860/61, places İsmail in Shumen (Şumnu) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow İsmail to nine places in 16 years, from Tekirdağ to Kandıra, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1870/71, then Boyabat from 1877 to 1883. Next came Antakya, Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) and Bahsavis from 1883 to 1891. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1891 to 1894. Few officials served in as many places; 17 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to a peak of 800 in 1870/71, as 2. Müdür in Ayvacık, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 600 kuruş. After the last annual entry, for 1893/94, the list of 1894/95 (AH 1312) gives the status word Vefat (death).
