Life#
Nebil Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1839/40 (AH 1255) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs director (rüsumat müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1855/56, Nebil began work in Istanbul, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 130 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 4 per cent worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Nebil in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Musika-yi Humayun. Nebil then moved to Ayvalık from 1868 to 1876, then Salihli from 1876 to 1878, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1876/77 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1877/78. From 1878 to 1904 the annual entries place Nebil in Alaşehir, first as 2. Müdür, from 1879/80 as 3. Müdür. Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 130 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 800 in 1877/78, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Salihli, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1903/04, the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
