Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1839/40 (AH 1255), Ömer Tahir Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). At about 20, in 1859/60, Ömer Tahir began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 450 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1860/61, places Ömer Tahir in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1868/69. Ömer Tahir then moved to Konya in 1869/70, as an assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini). From 1870 to 1888 the annual entries place Ömer Tahir again in Istanbul, first as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), from 1874/75 as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür).
The salary went from 450 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to 2,000 in 1869/70, the peak, as Müfettiş Muavini in Konya, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 1,000 kuruş. In all, 29 years of salary come to 404,640 kuruş, 2.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 8 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1887/88; the list of 1888/89 (AH 1306) gives the status word Vefat (death).
