Life#
This official was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1846/47 (AH 1263) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
The official began work in Thessaloniki in 1864/65, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 260 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places the official in Thessaloniki, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow the official to five places in eight years, then back to Thessaloniki from 1879 to 1889. The official then moved to Ioannina (Yanya) from 1889 to 1895, then Beirut (Beyrut) and Kastamonu from 1895 to 1905. The last posts were in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) from 1905 to 1908. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Entries spanning 42 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 3,000 in 1905/06, as Başmüdür in Tripoli, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less.
