Life#
Mustafa Necip Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1864/65, Mustafa Necip began work in Targovishte (Eski Cuma), paid from the start, on 350 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places Mustafa Necip in Targovishte as Zabita, where the entries run to 1867/68. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Necip to Nablus, Tirebit and Edessa (Vodina) from 1869 to 1874, then back to Thessaloniki, the birthplace, from 1874 to 1876. Next came a return to Edessa from 1876 to 1880, then Polygyros in 1881/82. Mustafa Necip then moved to Kavadarci (Kavadar) from 1882 to 1887. The last post was in Thessaloniki again in 1887/88.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to 600 in 1870/71, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tirebit, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 132,660 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1887/88.
