Life#
Born in Tekirdağ in 1844/45 (AH 1260), Hazım Rasim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hazım Rasim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Tekirdağ in 1860/61, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 576 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, places Hazım Rasim in Ayvalık as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Silivri from 1866 to 1871. From 1871 to 1897 the annual entries place Hazım Rasim in Tekirdağ, the birthplace. A career like this is rare; fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout.
