Life#
Born in Tekirdağ in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Rasim Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Rasim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1863/64, Rasim began work in the Karantina Kalemi in Tekirdağ, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with Rasim in the Karantina Kitabeti in Tekirdağ, the birthplace. Rasim then moved to Çorlu from 1867 to 1872, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru), then Ayvacık from 1872 to 1874, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1872/73. The annual lists then follow Rasim to Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) from 1874 to 1888. The last entry, for 1888/89, names neither a title nor a place.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 730 in 1872/73, as 2. Müdür in Ayvacık, when 62 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1888/89; the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
