Life#
Born in Kayseri in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hacı Ahmet Behçet Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Behçet began work in Istanbul in 1863/64, at about 22, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1866/67, places Ahmet Behçet in Sjenica (Seniçe) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came seven places in 13 years, from Novi Pazar (Yenipazar) to Şile, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1869/70, then a return to Burdur from 1879 to 1881. Ahmet Behçet then moved to Arapgir, Tokat, Elbistan and Tarsus, four places in ten years, then Ermenek from 1891 to 1898. The last posts were in Malatya in 1898/99 and Sivrihisar in 1899/1900 and Kırşehir in 1900/01. In all, 16 places on two continents, a number reached by only 5 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 1,150 in 1876/77, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in İskenderun, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 750 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
