Life#
Born in Alanya (Alaiye) in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Nafiz Bey was the child of a pasha (paşa). At about 16, in 1857/58, Abdullah Nafiz began work in the Hariciye Kalemi in Istanbul, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places Abdullah Nafiz in Istanbul in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi). Abdullah Nafiz then moved to Beyoğlu from 1871 to 1876, then back to Istanbul from 1876 to 1879. The annual lists then follow Abdullah Nafiz to Beyoğlu in 1879/80, then back to Istanbul from 1880 to 1885. Next came Van, Konya and Hudavendigar from 1885 to 1893. The last post was in Kastamonu in 1893/94.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to 3,000 in 1881/82, the peak, as Ceza Mahkemesi Muddei Umumi in Istanbul, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 27 years of salary come to 540,600 kuruş, 3.1 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1893/94. Abdullah Nafiz received a rank (rütbe) and the Mecidi order.
