Life#
Mehmet Nuri Bey was born in Istanbul in 1839/40 (AH 1255), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Mutesellim". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the postal service (Posta) in Istanbul in 1869/70, at about 30, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 30 or older. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Mehmet Nuri as an official (Memur) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1873/74. The last post was in Silivri in 1875/76, with a rise to district governor (Kaymakam).
