Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266), Kapril Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Kapril had four years of schooling, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi), and wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 17, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Kapril in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1876/77. The annual lists then follow Kapril to Kibris, Sofia (Sofya), Çanakkale, Izmir (İzmir) and Üsküdar, five places in eight years, with a rise to Ticaret Mahkemesi Azasi in 1877/78. From 1884 to 1898 every annual entry places Kapril again in Izmir, first as 2. Bidayet Mahkemesi Riyaseti, from 1895/96 as 2. Ticaret Mahkemesi Riyaseti.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 3,000 in 1895/96, the peak, as 2. Ticaret Mahkemesi Riyaseti in Izmir, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less.
