Life#
Hafiz Hasan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan began work in the Maliye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1865/66, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Hasan as Zaptiye Memuru in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1878. Hasan then moved to Edirne from 1878 to 1880. From 1880 to 1891 every annual entry places Hasan in Sivas, first as an assistant at a court of first instance (Bidayet Mahkemesi Muavini), from 1887/88 as Istinaf Mahkemesi Muddei Umumi.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 3,000 in 1887/88, the peak, as Istinaf Mahkemesi Muddei Umumi in Sivas, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 404,760 kuruş, 2.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1890/91. Hasan received a rank (rütbe).
