Life#
Born in Chania (Hanya) in 1840/41 (AH 1256), Haridois Misaki Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). In all Haridois Misaki knew five languages, English, French, Greek (Rum), Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 22, in 1862/63, Haridois Misaki began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Edirne, paid from the start, on 600 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, places Haridois Misaki in Edirne as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Haridois Misaki to a post with no place named from 1869 to 1880, then Cezairi bahri sefid from 1880 to 1898, with a rise to assistant at a court of first instance (Bidayet Mahkemesi Muavini). Haridois Misaki then moved to Alexandroupoli in 1898/99, then Rethymno (Resmo) from 1899 to 1905, with a rise to Tahrirat Kalemi Muduru. The last post was in Gelibolu in 1905/06. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 1 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 45 years or more.
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to 1,900 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Tahrirat Kalemi Muduru in Rethymno, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06. Haridois Misaki received a rank (rütbe).
