Life#
Mustafa Necip Bey was born in Chios (Sakız) in 1856/57 (AH 1273), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Necip also wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1874/75, Mustafa Necip began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Chios, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Mustafa Necip as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru) in Chios, the birthplace. Next came Cezairi bahri sefid from 1878 to 1890, with a rise to registry clerk (Mukayyit) and to a post in the Musevvit Kalemi in 1880/81. The last post was in Chios again in 1890/91.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 1,000 in 1880/81, the peak, in the Musevvit Kalemi in Cezairi bahri sefid, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1890/91. Mustafa Necip received a rank (rütbe).
