Life#
Hasan Nazmi Efendi was born in Trikala (Tırhala) in 1856/57 (AH 1273), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Nazmi also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of French and Greek (Rum).
Hasan Nazmi began work in Trikala in 1875/76, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Hasan Nazmi in Domokos (Dömeke) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hasan Nazmi then moved to Karditsa in 1878/79 and Larissa in 1880/81. From 1881 to 1907 every annual entry places Hasan Nazmi in Thessaloniki (Selanik), first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1904/05 as an assistant director (Müdür Muavini).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 700 in 1905/06, the peak, as Müdür Muavini in Thessaloniki, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 30 years the salaries add up to 179,760 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
