Life#
Sami Efendi was born in Trikala (Tırhala) in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Sami also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Louros (Loros) in 1882/83, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Sami in Salahora as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Sami then moved to Ioannina (Yanya) from 1887 to 1892, then Preveza (Preveze) from 1892 to 1894. The last posts were in Kurveles from 1894 to 1902, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 500 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Kurveles, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1901/02, the list of 1902/03 (AH 1320) gives the status word Vefat (death).
