Life#
Born in Sivas in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Ahmet Şefik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ahmet Şefik had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Sivas in 1882/83, at about 17, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Ahmet Şefik in Sivas, the birthplace, in the Mesalihi Kalemi, where the entries run to 1893/94. Next came Sungurlu from 1894 to 1901, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last posts were in Elassona in 1901/02 and Serres (Siroz) in 1902/03.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 600 in 1894/95, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Sungurlu, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 16 years pay ended below where it began, 400 kuruş against 500; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
