Life#
Kirkor Haçatoryan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took 12 years, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani) and then a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Kirkor Haçatoryan also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Kirkor Haçatoryan began work in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 22, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1887/88 to 1902/03 places Kirkor Haçatoryan in Beyoğlu, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1893/94 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 300 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less.
