Life

Born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Ahmet Şevki Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Ahmet Şevki had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.

Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 24, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Ahmet Şevki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo (Halep). The last posts were in Servia in 1897/98 and Ioannina in 1898/99 and Kozan in 1899/1900.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Aleppo, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 15,420 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
