Life#
Mehmet Efendi was born in Malatya in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 26, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1895/96 to 1905/06 places Mehmet in the same post, official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 30 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 300 in 1905/06, as Mevrude Memuru in Istanbul, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less.
