Life#
Abdullah Hamdi Efendi was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1864/65 (AH 1281), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Posta Muduru". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1878/79, Abdullah Hamdi began work in Izmir, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1879/80 to 1906/07 places Abdullah Hamdi in Izmir, the birthplace, first as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), from 1889/90 in the office for important affairs (Mühimme Kalemi), from 1905/06 as a registered mail official (Taahhüt Memuru) and from 1906/07 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 500 in 1895/96, in the Mühimme Kalemi in Izmir, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 104,220 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
