Life#
Mehmet Haşim Efendi was born in Gelibolu in 1844/45 (AH 1260), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Haşim began work in Gelibolu in 1862/63, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Mehmet Haşim as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Gelibolu, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1868/69. Next came Biga and Edremit from 1869 to 1874, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1869/70, then Çanakkale from 1874 to 1880. From 1880 to 1903 the annual entries place Mehmet Haşim in Izmir (İzmir), with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür). Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 41 years or more.
