Life#
Naum Salaho Efendi was born in Mosul (Musul) in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Naum Salaho also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 24, in 1876/77, Naum Salaho began work in Al-Faw (Fav), paid from the start, on 750 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Naum Salaho in Al-Faw as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1896/97, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1881/82. For 1897 to 1899 the lists have no entry. Next came Basra from 1899 to 1905. The last post was in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1905/06.
The salary went from 750 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 1,300 in 1892/93, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Al-Faw, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 359,280 kuruş, 2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
