Life#
İspridyon Yavi Efendi was born in Ayvalık in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a doctor (doktor). Schooling took four years, at an Israelite school (İsrail Mektebi); İspridyon Yavi also wrote English as well as Turkish.
İspridyon Yavi began work in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1875/76, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 800 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places İspridyon Yavi in Al-Faw (Fav) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1884/85. The annual lists then follow İspridyon Yavi to Basra from 1885 to 1889, then back to Al-Faw from 1889 to 1892. The last posts were in Basra again from 1892 to 1899. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 800 kuruş a month in 1877/78, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Al-Faw, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 23 years pay ended below where it began, 684 kuruş against 800; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
