Life#
Born in Mosul (Musul) in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Mensur Efendi came from the Syriac Christian (Süryani) community. Mensur had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic and French.
Work began in Mosul in 1878, at about 24, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Mensur in Baghdad (Bağdat) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1882/83. The annual lists then follow Mensur to Al-Faw (Fav) from 1883 to 1893. The last post was in Mosul, the birthplace, in 1893/94.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 650 in 1883/84, as Muhabere Memuru in Al-Faw, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1893/94.
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
