Life#
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Yosef Efendi came from the Chaldean Christian (Keldani) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Yosef had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Mosul (Musul) in 1872/73, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Yosef in Mosul as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1882/83. The annual lists then follow Yosef to Nasiriyah (Nasıriye) from 1883 to 1899, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Khanaqin (Hanikin) from 1899 to 1901.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 800 in 1883/84, as 2. Müdür in Nasiriyah, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 26 years of salary come to 219,600 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
