Life#
Abdulkerim Fehmi Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Abdulkerim Fehmi also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
At about 16, in 1866/67, Abdulkerim Fehmi began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in İskenderun, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Abdulkerim Fehmi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in İskenderun. For 1868 to 1873 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Abdulkerim Fehmi to Kozan and Varna from 1873 to 1876, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1875/76, then Van from 1876 to 1880. Next came Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1880 to 1889, then Nasiriyah (Nasıriye) and Mosul (Musul) from 1889 to 1892, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1889/90. The last posts were in Mardin from 1892 to 1897. Eight provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 570 in 1889/90, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Nasiriyah, when 57 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
