Life#
Ahmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Artvin (Livane) in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a religious scholar (ulema). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1864/65, at about 13, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Ahmet Tevfik in Baghdad in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), where the entries run to 1875/76, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1872/73. Next came Hillah (Hille) from 1876 to 1878, then a return to Baghdad from 1878 to 1892. The last posts were in Hama and Amarah (Amare) from 1892 to 1897 and Hama again in 1897/98, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1892/93.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 800 in 1892/93, as 2. Müdür in Hama, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 184,620 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
