Life#
Abdurrezzak Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Abdurrezzak also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic.
At about 13, in 1858/59, Abdurrezzak began work in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Baghdad, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. From 1858/59 to 1883/84 every annual entry places Abdurrezzak in Baghdad, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1869/70 as DH Mukayyit and from 1878/79 as DH Mudur Muavini.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1858/59 to a peak of 1,500 in 1878/79, as DH Mudur Muavini in Baghdad, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 1,200 kuruş. In all, 27 years of salary come to 219,000 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1883/84.
