Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
The annual lists begin in 1858/59, with Mehmet Tevfik as Ilmiye in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1870/71, with a rise to a post in the Seriat Kalemi in 1865/66. For 1871 to 1889 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Chios (Sakız) in 1889/90, with a rise to Niyabet.
