Life#
Ahmet İsmet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took nine years, at the House of Education (Darülmaarif); Ahmet İsmet also wrote Turkish, spoke Arabic and had some knowledge of Greek (Rum).
Work began in the Vukuat Kalemi in Istanbul in 1869/70, at about 27, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Ahmet İsmet in Beyoğlu in the Temyiz 3. Kitabeti, where the entries run to 1878. Ahmet İsmet then moved to Suriye and Diyarbakır from 1878 to 1881, with a rise to Istinaf Mahkemesi in 1878/79. From 1881 to 1897 every annual entry places Ahmet İsmet in Erzurum, first as Istinaf Mahkemesi, from 1882/83 as Adliye Mufettisi.
Pay rose from 1,250 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 4,400 in 1882/83, as Adliye Mufettisi in Erzurum, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 1,109,400 kuruş, 6.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by 29 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
