Life#
Born in Sivas in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Talat Efendi was the child of an imam. Abdullah Talat had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1879/80, Abdullah Talat began work in Sivas, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Abdullah Talat in Bitlis as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Abdullah Talat then moved to Erzincan from 1882 to 1884, then Erzurum from 1884 to 1894. Next came Ağrı in 1894/95, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), then a return to Bitlis from 1895 to 1897. The last posts were in Siirt and Velibaba from 1897 to 1906 and Milo in 1906/07. The lists have no entry for 1898 to 1903.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 800 in 1894/95, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Ağrı, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 143,880 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
