Life#
Born in Dersim in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Abrik Nadir Efendi was the child of a member of a court (mahkeme azası). Abrik Nadir had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
At about 18, in 1880/81, Abrik Nadir began work in the Mektubi Kalemi in Dersim, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Abrik Nadir as an official (Memur) in Mazgirt. The last post was in Dersim, the birthplace, in 1888/89.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1886/87, as Memur in Mazgirt, when 11 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 10,800 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1888/89.
