Life#
Mehmet Ferit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Ferit began work in Istanbul in 1881/82, at about 21, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1886/87, to 1901/02, every annual entry places Mehmet Ferit in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 300 in 1900/01, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 28,560 kuruş, 36 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
