Life#
Mehmet Hüsnü Bey was born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1877/78, at about 20, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1877/78 to 1903/04 places Mehmet Hüsnü in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, 41 kept one title in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 500 in 1899/1900, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 101,700 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned.
