Life#
Mehmet Faik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official of the civil administration (mülkiye memuru). Schooling took seven years, at the Maarif Mektebi.
Work began in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Şanlıurfa (Urfa) in 1861/62, at about 13, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 280 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Mehmet Faik in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Şanlıurfa. From 1874 to 1900 the annual entries place Mehmet Faik in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi), from 1876/77 in the Muhasebe Kalemi.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 600 in 1876/77, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 154,080 kuruş, 89 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
