Life#
Hafiz Hasan Husnu Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Rusumat Kalemi in Istanbul in 1872/73, at about 21, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Hasan Husnu in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), where the entries run to 1879/80, with a rise to registry clerk (Mukayyit) in 1875/76. From 1880 to 1908 the annual entries place Hasan Husnu in Erzurum, first as Mukayyit, from 1883/84 in the Tatbik Kalemi.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 500 in 1907/08, in the Tatbik Kalemi in Erzurum, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 36 years the salaries add up to 126,000 kuruş, 58 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
