What the job was
Customs official (rüsumat memuru). From 1860 the customs were run by salaried officials instead of tax farmers, and from 1870 by the Customs Administration (Rüsumat Emaneti) in Istanbul with directorates in the provinces.

History
From 1887 Darüşşafaka taught tax subjects to pupils who were to enter the customs, and a decree obtained by Grand Vezir Cevad Paşa provided for the employment of its graduates in the customs.
