Life#
Osman Hulusi Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Osman Hulusi began work in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1862/63, at about 19, paid from the start, on 350 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1862/63, with Osman Hulusi as Tuz Anbari in Beirut. Osman Hulusi then moved to Svishtov (Ziştovi), Vidin and Samsun from 1863 to 1871. From 1871 to 1889 every annual entry places Osman Hulusi in Trabzon, the birthplace, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to a peak of 500 in 1882/83, as Posta Memuru in Trabzon, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 27 years of salary come to 124,800 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1888/89.
